Batgirl #7, Batman Beyond #4, Detective Comics #949

The three books that we have this week focuses a lot on character development which is a good thing most of the time. The three books we are looking at are Detective Comics #949, Batman Beyond #4 and Batgirl #7.

Batwoman has to defend the Bat Family’s base in Detective Comics #949.  As I said there is a lot of character development in this book.  The problem with this issue is we don’t get any conclusions to any of the sub-plots.  I felt like this was a great opportunity for the writer to tie up a few loose ends but I guess he has other plans.  I have a feeling that people who don’t read this comic and want to read the new Batwoman comic will be totally lost due to the fact that this story continues in the new Batwoman comics.

Terry McGuiness has to save himself and his former girlfriend in Batman Beyond #4.  I enjoyed this action packed issue a lot.  One thing that I thought the author could have handled better was the revealing of the secret to the characters that the readers already knew about.

Barbara Gordon finds a new boyfriend who is the Penguin’s own son in Batgirl #7.  This issue is a great start to a new story line.  I am so interested in how this story plays out.  I do not know if the Penguin’s son is a new character or has been in a comic before.  I am a little worried, however, that the story will turn into something that we have seen thousands of times before.

This is a small week for Batman Comics.  All we have is Batman #15 and Nightwing #13.  In other news we have twenty blogs posts to go until the one hundredth this week in Gotham post.  On the one hundredth post I will review any comics that week and discuss my favourite story from the last one hundredth weeks.

Batman learns that someone set up Catwoman in Batman #15. Before we get into the issue itself, I want to comment that on the DC website the character Swamp Thing would appear in this issue.  He was nowhere to be found.  The story of the issue was well written.  In my opinion I believe DC is setting up Catwoman for a heroic sacrifice but I don’t want them to kill off Catwoman.

As he goes deeper into the rabbit-hole of Bludhaven , Nightwing has to save the mayor in Nightwing #13.  While I enjoyed this story line, this issue was weak.  The previous three issues were so good that this issue pales in comparison.  Part of this is I believe that the writer wrote himself into a bit of a corner. This is not a bad comic, it just didn’t carry the same level of excitement that the last three issues had.

All*Star Batman #6, Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #6, Batman, Detective Comics #948, Gotham Academy Second Semester #5, Red Hood and the Outlaws #6

This week I decided to count how many ongoing stories I’m involved with, I learned that there is about 20.  No wonder I forget minor details.  This week we have Detective Comics #948, All*Star Batman #6, Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #6, Red Hood and the Outlaws #6, and Gotham Academy Second Semester #5.

Batwoman deals with her past while dealing with the aftermath of Night of the Monster Man in Detective Comics #948.  This comic is set up to the Batwoman Comic next month.  I enjoyed this story a lot.  The title of this story is called Batwoman Begins but it does not focus much on her origin story at all so I don’t really understand the title.  If you are a Batwoman fan I suggest picking this up.

Batman hunts down Mr. Freeze in All*Star Batman #6.  This comic was weird.  It was written more like a picture book than a comic book.  I like the ideas behind this story but I’m a little hesitant about the format of this story.  This was a very similar problem with the comic adaptation for “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”  I’m hoping that I will enjoy the rest of this story although the writer has messed up Mr. Freeze’s origin story in the past in my opinion.

Huntress has to deal with her mother who is now a villain in Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #6.  While I like this finale to the first story of this comic series, there were way too many clichés to count.  You had the “mother is a bad guy” cliché, “I’m not going to kill him” cliché, and the “I’m going to try to save you from yourself” cliché.  I just hope that in the future the writer of this comic refrains from using more than one cliché per issue.

Red Hood has to defeat Black Mask and save Bizzaro in Red Hood and the Outlaws #6.  There is not much character development in this story.  The only thing that this story is good for is an epic final battle between Red Hood and Black Mask.  I should be disappointed however we had a ton of character development in the previous issue so I am willing to forgive the writer this time.

Olivia and friends try to prevent some one of their pals from being expelled in Gotham Academy Second Semester #5.  The problem with this issue is the fact that the person who is going to be expelled, I really don’t care about at all.  This is due to the fact that I barely know anything about him.  If I knew more about this person I would care a lot more but the author decided to pick the least developed character in the group.

Batman

It’s the New Year and I got a new edition to the blog.  Now every blog post will be able translated to Cow.  I don’t know why I thought that was a good idea but if you speak Cow you’re strange.  This week the two comics we are going to look at are Batman #14 and Nightwing #12.

Catwoman does not want to be alone in Batman #14.  After the events of Batman #13, Catwoman is worried that she will go back to death row.  Batman doesn’t want that to happen.  This issue sets up the romantic connection between Batman and Catwoman again after not touching on it for years.  What I like is it’s a romantic story for people who don’t like to read romance novels.

Nightwing teams up with former super villains to find out what is going on in the City of Bludhaven in Nightwing #12.  This issue was amazing and I feel like I am reading a conspiracy novel.  The problem I have is I know nothing about the bad guy in this issue which is the super villain Orca.  I wish the author would give a recap of who Orca is.
